People In Music History
Puccini, Giacomo [Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria] (1858-1924) Italian
composer, pupil of Bazzini and Ponchielli. In youth a church musician. Works
almost entirely operatic, including (in this order) Manon Lescaut (1893), La
Boheme, Tosca, Madam Butterfly, The Girl of the Golden West; a "triptych" (It.,
trittico) (The Cloak, Sister Angelica, Gianni Schicchi) intended to form a
single bill; Turandot (1924, unfinished). Became one of history's most
successful opera composers through a gift for "strong" melody wedded to
forceful dramatic plots (See Verismo): was also original harmonist and
orchestrator.
